Alfred North Whitehead’s Ideas on University Education

Alfred North Whitehead is known as a mathematician, philosopher and educationist. Some of his ideas on education are profound and worthwhile for us getting access to and applying in the modern education. There is no denying that it is impossible to cover all his educational ideas in this essay, so this passage will only focus on his ideas on university teaching and learning.

First, what is university education? The universities are schools of education, and schools of research.

Second, what are the aims of university education? For Whitehead, university education is a bridge of knowledge and life connecting the young with the old and should foster the students’ wisdom, imaginative power and creative power. From this saying, we can figure out the aims of university education: cultivating students’ imagination and wisdom. For my part, the mission of a university is more than that. University not only needs to train people to be elites, not also establishes new knowledge and fosters the standards for society. Universities are the nucleus of the wisdom.

Third, what are the contents in university teaching and learning? Whitehead thought that the contents of university education and the way of transforming must be lively. Successful education in universities must always be a certain freshness in the knowledge dealt with. It must be either new in itself or invested with some novelty of application to the new world of new times. Teachers may be dealing with knowledge of the old species, with some old truth; but somehow it must come to the students, as it were, just drawn out of the sea and with the freshness of its immediate importance. That means when transmitting old knowledge, teachers should adopt some creative and new teaching methods. Besides, common knowledge and specialized knowledge also are required in the university education. As to this point, I agree with Whitehead. Because university is the centre of wisdom, students need to get access to some new knowledge. Only in this way, can they make a great contribution to society now or in the future. What’s more, teaching in a fresh approach will intrigue students’ interests, and then they will grasp the knowledge as well as skills easily and profoundly.

Forth, how to convey knowledge to students? Whitehead considered that university education is not spoon-fed instructing and learning. The process of investing knowledge is that the young and the old, the teachers and the students get together and communicate to exchange their own ideas of some situation and theories etc. In my opinion, spoon-fed education is really not a good way for teaching and learning. However, if we just accent the communication and exchange, it is far more than enough. On one hand, we need to stress the importance of intercourse. On the other hand, we need to have some teacher-center lectures. If the students have no ideas about one matter, how can teachers and students to make a conversation based on the requirement. So, at first teachers should educate students about this knowledge.

Finally, whitehead attached the importance on the connection between the transmitted knowledge and students’ real life. I approve of this thought, because knowledge should not be dead, and we need to apply what we have learnt in the university. Only in this way, our knowledge is valuable. In a word, education is the acquisition of the art of the utilization of knowledge.
